N-proper-fs  |  10× in 1 sense
Zin; a wilderness region in the southern Negev associated with Kadesh-barnea and Israel's wanderings.
A proper noun designating the wilderness of Zin, a barren desert region in the southern Negev through which Israel traveled during the Exodus. It is closely associated with Kadesh-barnea (Num 20:1; 27:14) and features prominently in the boundary descriptions of the Promised Land (Num 34:3-4; Josh 15:1). This is also the region where Miriam died and where Moses struck the rock at Meribah. Transliterations vary across languages—Tsin, Tzin, Sin—but all refer to the same locale.

Senses
1. Zin (wilderness region) The wilderness of Zin, a desert region in the southern Negev forming the southern boundary of Canaan and encompassing Kadesh-barnea. Nearly all occurrences appear in the Priestly source, either in boundary lists (Num 34:3-4; Josh 15:1, 3) or in narratives of Israel's sojourn (Num 13:21; 20:1; 33:36). The repeated phrase midbar-tsin ('wilderness of Zin') anchors some of the most consequential events of the wandering period, including the deaths of Miriam and Aaron and Moses' sin at Meribah (Num 27:14; Deut 32:51). Spanish Sin/Zin, French Tsin, and German Tsin all represent the same geographic referent. 10×
