Zalmunna — Midianite king captured and executed by Gideon alongside Zebah after the great rout
Zalmunna (צַלְמֻנָּע) is the proper name of one of the two kings of Midian — always paired with Zebah — who were pursued, captured, and executed by Gideon following the decisive rout of the Midianite army. The name may derive from צֵל ('shadow') + מָנַע ('withhold'), perhaps meaning 'shade is withheld,' though its etymology remains uncertain. Gideon's pursuit of Zebah and Zalmunna across the Jordan, his encounter with the uncooperative men of Succoth and Penuel, and his personal execution of the two kings form one of the most vivid narratives in Judges 8:5-21. Psalm 83:12 invokes Zebah and Zalmunna as paradigmatic defeated enemies: 'Make their nobles like Zebah and Zalmunna.' Spanish 'Tsalmuná' and Swahili 'Salmuna' transliterate the name.
