Zion — the fortified hill of Jerusalem, extending to denote the holy city, its temple mount, and God's covenant people
Zion (tsiyyon) originally designated the Jebusite stronghold on the southeastern ridge of Jerusalem captured by David and renamed the City of David (2 Sam 5:7). Over time the name expanded to encompass the Temple mount, the entire city, and by poetic metonymy the people of God themselves. The prophets especially favor Zion as a theological symbol: 'daughter of Zion' personifies Jerusalem in her vulnerability and hope (Isa 1:8; Zech 9:9). Across all 154 occurrences the name carries a weight of divine election, dwelling, and future restoration that no mere toponym could convey.
