Zeboiim — one of the five cities of the plain destroyed with Sodom and Gomorrah; also a valley name in Benjamin.
Zeboiim (also spelled Zeboim) is a place name primarily identifying one of the five cities of the Jordan plain that shared the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. It appears in the Table of Nations as marking the border of Canaanite territory (Gen 10:19), in the war narrative of Genesis 14 where its king Shemeber joined the coalition (Gen 14:2, 8), and in Moses' warning that the land could become like Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim (Deut 29:23). Its most poignant appearance is Hosea 11:8, where God's anguished reluctance to destroy Ephraim is expressed through the question, 'How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim?' A separate location called the Valley of Zeboim appears in 1 Samuel 13:18 and Nehemiah 11:34.

1. Zeboiim (place name) — A proper noun identifying one of the five cities of the plain allied with Sodom, Gomorrah, and Admah. In the Table of Nations it marks the extent of Canaanite territory (Gen 10:19). Its king participated in the battle of the Valley of Siddim (Gen 14:2, 8). Deuteronomy 29:23 uses its destruction as a covenant warning. Most memorably, Hosea 11:8 pairs it with Admah in God's agonized self-deliberation about punishing Israel—'How can I treat you like Zeboiim?'—turning the destroyed city into a symbol of divine compassion overcoming judgment. The name may derive from tsevi ('gazelle') or relate to tseva'im ('hyenas'). German renders it 'Zebojim,' while English and French use 'Zeboiim,' and the LXX has Seboeim. 8×
