Zaanan, a town mentioned in Micah's judgment oracle, possibly identical with Zenan in Judah
Zaanan is a town named in Micah's wordplay-filled lament over Judah's cities. The prophet uses the similarity between the town's name and the verb "to come out" to make a grim pun: the inhabitants of Zaanan will not come out, trapped in their own judgment. Some scholars identify it with Zenan in the Shephelah lowlands of Judah. The Septuagint's rendering shows textual uncertainty, but the rhetorical force of Micah's oracle is clear regardless.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Appears in Micah 1:11 within a series of prophetic puns on town names. The French "Tsaanân" preserves the Hebrew form. The town serves as both a real location and a literary device, its name evoking themes of coming forth or failing to do so, fitting Micah's larger vision of judgment sweeping through the land. 1×
