Pithom, one of the Egyptian store-cities built by Israelite slaves under Pharaoh
Pithom was one of the store-cities that the enslaved Israelites were forced to build for Pharaoh, mentioned alongside Rameses in Exodus. Archaeological and historical work identifies it with Egyptian Per-Atum (House of Atum, a solar deity), likely located at Tel el-Maskhuta in the Wadi Tumilat region of Egypt. The name preserves the memory of brutal labor and oppression, a symbol of Israel's bondage that made the Exodus all the more miraculous.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Named in Exodus 1:11 as one of the supply centers (storage cities) constructed through forced labor. The Spanish "Pitom" and French "Pithom" maintain the transliteration. The city represents the apparatus of oppression under which Israel groaned before God heard their cry and raised up Moses. 1×
