Euphrates — the great river of western Asia, one of Eden's four rivers and Israel's ideal northern boundary
The Hebrew proper noun Perat, designating the Euphrates, the greatest river of western Asia. It first appears as one of the four rivers of Eden (Gen 2:14) and then as the northern boundary of the land promised to Abraham (Gen 15:18). Throughout the Deuteronomistic history and the prophets, 'the great river, the river Euphrates' marks the ideal extent of Israelite territory (Deut 1:7; 11:24; Josh 1:4). Jeremiah uses the Euphrates symbolically — commanding a linen belt to be buried there (Jer 13:4–7) — and historically, as the site of the pivotal battle of Carchemish (Jer 46:2, 6, 10). The Assyrian form Purattu lies behind the Hebrew name, passing through Old Persian Ufratu to Greek Euphrates.
