Perets (Perez), son of Judah and Tamar; ancestor of David and the Messianic line.
Perets—whose name means 'breach' after the dramatic moment when he broke through ahead of his twin Zerah at birth (Gen 38:29)—became the head of a major Judahite clan. Through his line descend Hezron, Ram, and ultimately David (Ruth 4:12, 18–22; 1 Chr 2:4–5). The Perezites form one of Judah's chief tribal divisions (Num 26:20–21), and postexilic Jerusalem was settled largely by his descendants (1 Chr 9:4; Neh 11:4, 6). The genealogy of Ruth explicitly traces the royal lineage from Perets to David, making this name a theological marker of God's sovereign purpose working through an unlikely union. Greek Φαρες and Spanish 'Fares' both preserve the Septuagint form familiar from Matthew's genealogy of Christ.
Senses
1. Perets / Perez (proper name) — The proper name Perets (פֶּרֶץ, 'breach'), designating the son of Judah and Tamar who became ancestor of the Davidic royal line. Named for breaking through the womb ahead of his twin (Gen 38:29), he heads the Perezite clan within Judah (Num 26:20). Ruth 4:12, 18 explicitly traces the line from Perets through Boaz to David, cementing his genealogical importance. The Chronicles and Nehemiah references (1 Chr 2:4; 4:1; 9:4; 27:3; Neh 11:4, 6) confirm continued prominence of his descendants in postexilic Judah. 15×
