Pharaoh Necho (II); the Egyptian king who killed Josiah and installed Jehoiakim on Judah's throne.
The proper name of Pharaoh Necho II, ruler of Egypt's 26th dynasty (r. 610–595 BC), who features at a decisive turning point in Judah's history. Marching north to aid Assyria against Babylon, Necho killed King Josiah at Megiddo (2 Kgs 23:29), imposed tribute on Judah, deposed Josiah's son Jehoahaz, and installed Jehoiakim as a vassal king (2 Kgs 23:33–35). He was later defeated by Nebuchadnezzar at Carchemish (Jer 46:2). The Chronicler's account adds that Necho claimed divine authorization for his march (2 Chr 35:20–22). All translations transliterate the name variously as Necho/Neco/Neko.
