Perizzite — one of the pre-Israelite peoples of Canaan, regularly listed among nations to be dispossessed
The Perizzites (פְּרִזִּי) are one of the indigenous Canaanite peoples whose land was promised to Israel. They appear almost exclusively in the stereotyped conquest lists alongside Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites, and Jebusites (Exod 3:8; Deut 7:1; Josh 3:10). Outside these formulaic lists, they occur in the patriarchal narratives: Abram and Lot separate while 'the Canaanite and the Perizzite were dwelling in the land' (Gen 13:7), and Jacob fears retaliation from them after the Shechem incident (Gen 34:30). The etymology may connect to פְּרָזָה ('unwalled settlement'), suggesting open-country dwellers, though this remains uncertain.
Senses
1. Perizzite people group — Gentilic noun for the Perizzites, a pre-Israelite people in Canaan. Found mainly in formulaic dispossession lists (Exod 3:8; Deut 7:1; Josh 3:10; 24:11). Independent narrative mentions: Gen 13:7 (dwelling alongside the Canaanite) and Gen 34:30 (Jacob's fear after Shechem). Possibly from פְּרָזָה ('unwalled settlement'). Translations preserve the name faithfully (spa 'ferezeo,' deu 'Perisiter'). 23×
