break forth (in song/joy); break, shatter (physically)
Senses
1. break forth (in song/joy) — To burst forth or break out in joyful singing and exultation, used in Qal of exuberant, audible celebration before YHWH. Found almost exclusively in Isaiah's prophecies of restoration (Isa 14:7; 44:23; 49:13; 52:9; 54:1; 55:12) and in Psalm 98:4 calling creation to praise. Multilingual glosses converge: Arabic افْرَحُوا 'rejoice,' French eclater 'burst out,' Spanish prorrumpir 'break forth,' Korean 터뜨리라 'burst out,' Hindi फूट पड़ो 'burst forth.' The Ketiv variant at Isa 49:13 (יפצחו) is the same meaning in jussive form. 8×

2. break, shatter (physically) — To break or crush physically, used in Piel intensive stem with the sense of violent shattering of bones or objects. In Micah 3:3 the prophets' oppressors are described as those who 'broke' (פִּצֵּחוּ) the bones of the people. Arabic كَسَّرُوا 'they crushed,' Hindi तोड़ीं 'they broke,' Korean 부러뜨렸다 'they snapped/broke,' Spanish quebraron 'they shattered.' This physical, destructive meaning in the Piel stands clearly apart from the Qal sense of joyful bursting forth. 1×
