open wide (the mouth), usually expressing voracious desire, greed, or eager longing
This verb describes the act of opening the mouth wide, whether in voracious greed (Sheol in Isa 5:14), hostile mockery (Job 16:10), eager desire for good (Job 29:23), or spiritual longing (Ps 119:131). The image is vivid: a gaping mouth expressing intense appetite or emotion. In three passages the mouth belongs to people; in Isaiah 5:14 it personifies the insatiable grave. The word appears in both positive contexts (longing for God's commands) and negative (greed, mockery).
