Peninnah, Elkanah's second wife, rival to Hannah
Peninnah was one of Elkanah's two wives, mentioned only in 1 Samuel 1. While Hannah remained childless, Peninnah had children and used this advantage to provoke and humiliate Hannah, especially during their annual trips to Shiloh for sacrifice. Her name possibly means 'pearl' or 'coral,' but her behavior contrasts sharply with any precious connotation. She represents the painful dynamics of polygamous households and serves as foil to Hannah's suffering and eventual triumph.
