Peninnah, Elkanah's second wife, rival to Hannah
Peninnah was one of Elkanah's two wives, mentioned only in 1 Samuel 1. While Hannah remained childless, Peninnah had children and used this advantage to provoke and humiliate Hannah, especially during their annual trips to Shiloh for sacrifice. Her name possibly means 'pearl' or 'coral,' but her behavior contrasts sharply with any precious connotation. She represents the painful dynamics of polygamous households and serves as foil to Hannah's suffering and eventual triumph. After 1 Samuel 1, she disappears from the narrative, overshadowed by Hannah's miraculous conception of Samuel.

Senses
1. sense 1 Personal name of Elkanah's wife and Hannah's rival. 1 Samuel 1:2 introduces the household: 'He had two wives. The name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah (פְּנִנָּה). And Peninnah (וְלִפְנִנָּה) had children, but Hannah had no children.' Verse 4 notes Elkanah's sacrificial portions: 'to Peninnah (וְלִפְנִנָּה) his wife and to all her sons and daughters he gave portions.' Her role as the fertile wife who provoked the barren Hannah drives the narrative tension. The name may derive from 'pearl/coral.' Translations preserve: 'Peninnah,' Spanish 'Peniná,' French 'Peninna.'
