Penuel/Peniel ('face of God'); a place east of the Jordan and a personal name in Judah and Benjamin.
A proper noun meaning 'face of God,' appearing in two variant spellings: Peniel (פְּנִיאֵל, Gen 32:31) and Penuel (פְּנוּאֵל). The name is most famous as the site east of the Jordan where Jacob wrestled with the divine being and declared, 'I have seen God face to face' (Gen 32:30–31). Gideon later encountered hostility from the men of Penuel during his pursuit of the Midianites (Judg 8:8–9, 17), and Jeroboam fortified the city (1 Kgs 12:25). The name also belongs to two individuals in the Chronicler's genealogies (1 Chr 4:4; 8:25). The LXX rendering 'eidos theou' (form of God) in Genesis preserves the etymological meaning.
