Philistia (Pelesheth) — the coastal territory of the Philistines in southwestern Canaan, used in poetic and late texts.
Pelesheth is the Hebrew geographical name for Philistia, the coastal strip along southwestern Canaan inhabited by the Philistines. Notably, this particular form appears only in poetic and later texts, never in the main prose narratives of Judges or Samuel where the Philistines feature so prominently. It first appears in the Song of the Sea (Exod 15:14), then in prophetic oracles against the nations (Isa 14:29, 31), and in several psalms (Ps 60:10 = 108:10; 83:8; 87:4). The Greek tradition renders it with allophyloi ('foreigners') rather than a transliteration, reflecting how the LXX perceived the Philistines as quintessential outsiders.

Senses
1. Philistia The geographical territory of the Philistines along the southwestern coast of Canaan, used exclusively in poetic and late biblical texts. The Song of the Sea names its inhabitants as trembling at Israel's deliverance (Exod 15:14). Isaiah's oracles warn Philistia not to rejoice at Assyria's troubles (Isa 14:29, 31). In the Psalms, Philistia appears as a conquered foe ('over Philistia I shout in triumph,' Ps 60:10 = 108:10), a hostile conspirator (Ps 83:8), and even a future worshiper of YHWH (Ps 87:4). The LXX's rendering as allophyloi ('foreigners') and the Assyrian forms Palastu/Pilistu connect this name to Greek Palaistine, the ultimate source of the modern name 'Palestine.'
