V-Piel-Imperf-3ms  |  6× in 2 senses
To weigh, ponder, evaluate; to make level or smooth a path (Piel denominative from peles, 'scales')
A Piel denominative verb drawn from the noun for 'scales' or 'balance,' palas carries the vivid image of placing something on a scale to test its true weight. In one stream of usage, it describes weighing out or pondering actions and character, as when the psalmist accuses corrupt judges of weighing out violence (Ps 58:2). In the other, it means to make a path level and smooth, whether God leveling the way for the righteous (Isa 26:7) or the sage urging the pupil to make straight the track underfoot (Prov 4:26). The Spanish 'pesar' and 'allanar' neatly capture these two faces of the word.

Senses
1. weigh, ponder, evaluate To weigh out, ponder, or evaluate, as if placing on a balance. Used metaphorically of moral reckoning: Psalm 58:2 accuses judges of 'weighing out violence' with their hands, and Proverbs 5:6, 21 speak of God pondering a person's paths. Spanish 'pesar/ponderar' and German 'wiegen heraus' preserve the weighing metaphor clearly.

2. make level, smooth (a path) To make level or smooth, said of preparing a path or way. Proverbs 4:26 commands 'make level the track of your feet,' and Isaiah 26:7 declares God levels the path of the upright. Spanish 'allanar' (to flatten) and the English 'make level' converge on the road-preparation image, distinct from the evaluative sense.
