N-ms  |  33× in 2 senses
Herb, herbage, grass, or green vegetation; plant life given by God for food and as a symbol of transience.
Covers the whole range of green growing things, from wild grass of the field to cultivated herbs granted for food. In the creation account (Gen 1:11-12, 29-30), it denotes the seed-bearing plants God provides as nourishment, while in prophetic and wisdom literature it becomes an image of human frailty -- people flourish like grass but quickly wither (Ps 102:4, 11). Arabic 'ushb and German 'Kraut' preserve the dual range of wild herbage and useful herbs. The plagues of Egypt vividly depict every esev of the field consumed by hail and locusts (Exod 9:22, 25; 10:12, 15).

Senses
1. grass, green herbage Wild grass or green herbage growing in fields and open land, often used as a metaphor for human transience or vulnerability to divine judgment. Arabic 'ushb, Hindi ghas, and Swahili nyasi all point to uncultivated grassland. The Egyptian plagues destroy every esev of the field (Exod 9:22, 25; 10:12, 15), and the Psalmist's heart is 'withered like grass' (Ps 102:4, 11). Deuteronomy 32:2 pairs it with deshe (tender grass) under gentle rain. 22×

2. plants, vegetation, herbs Cultivated plants, edible vegetation, or herbs specifically granted as food by God to humans and animals. German 'Kraut' (herb/plant) and Spanish 'hierba' in the creation texts mark this as purposeful provision. Foundational in Genesis 1:11-12, 29-30, where God creates seed-bearing plants and gives every green herb for food. Distinguished from the wild-grass sense by the context of divine ordering and agricultural utility (Gen 2:5; Deut 11:15). 11×
