Conj-w | V-Piel-Prtcpl-ms  |  5× in 1 sense
to twist, make crooked, pervert; to distort what is straight or right
Rooted in the idea of physical twisting, this verb extends powerfully into moral and judicial territory. In its Piel stem it describes the deliberate distortion of paths, justice, or conduct — the leaders of Micah 3:9 'make crooked all that is straight,' and in Isa 59:8 the wicked 'have twisted their paths.' The Niphal participle in Prov 28:18 describes one who is 'crooked in ways,' while the Hiphil in Job 9:20 has God declaring a person perverse. Spanish 'torcer/torcieron' and German equivalents preserve the core image of bending what should be straight.

Senses
1. sense 1 To twist, make crooked, or pervert — used of moral and behavioral distortion. The Piel describes deliberate warping of paths or justice (Isa 59:8 'their paths they have twisted'; Mic 3:9 'all that is straight they make crooked'). The Niphal portrays a settled state of crookedness in conduct (Prov 28:18 'crooked in ways'; Prov 10:9). The Hiphil in Job 9:20 uniquely has God as subject: 'he would declare me perverse.' Spanish 'tuercen' and 'torcieron' preserve the physical twisting metaphor applied to moral reality.
