Anathoth, a Levitical city in Benjamin; hometown of Jeremiah and place of Abiathar's exile.
ʿAnātôt names a Levitical town in the tribal territory of Benjamin, situated about three miles north-northeast of Jerusalem at modern ʿAnātā. It enters the biblical record as a Levitical allotment (Josh 21:18) and gains prominence when Solomon banishes the priest Abiathar there (1 Kgs 2:26). Its greatest fame comes as the birthplace and home of Jeremiah, whose own townsmen conspired against him (Jer 1:1; 11:21–23). Jeremiah's purchase of a field in Anathoth during the siege of Jerusalem becomes a prophetic sign of future restoration (Jer 32:7–9). Postexilic returnees from the town are counted among the repatriates (Ezra 2:23; Neh 7:27; 11:32). The name may echo the Canaanite goddess Anat.
