Achan, the man of Judah who took devoted plunder from Jericho, bringing disaster on Israel at Ai (Josh 7).
Achan (עָכָן) is the man from the tribe of Judah who violated the ban (חֵרֶם) on Jericho's spoils by secretly taking a Babylonian garment, silver, and a gold bar (Josh 7:1, 18-24). His theft caused Israel's devastating defeat at Ai, and after being identified by sacred lot, he and his household were stoned and burned in the Valley of Achor. The variant spelling עָכָר in 1 Chronicles 2:7 connects his name etymologically to עָכוֹר ('trouble'), as Joshua declared: 'Why have you brought trouble (עֲכַרְתָּנוּ) on us?' The Septuagint consistently renders his name as Achar.
