En-dor; 'spring of dwelling,' a city in Manasseh famous for Saul's consultation with the medium
En-dor, meaning 'spring of dwelling' or 'spring of the generation,' is most famous as the site where Saul consulted a medium on the eve of his final battle. Located about 14 miles north-northeast of the Jezreel valley, modern Endur preserves the ancient name. The city was allocated to Manasseh but apparently remained under Canaanite control initially, as Joshua 17:11 lists it among cities where Israel failed to drive out the inhabitants. Psalm 83:10 recalls an earlier victory at En-dor, possibly referring to Deborah and Barak's triumph over Sisera. The city's persistent association with the medium story has made its name synonymous with occult consultation.

Senses
1. sense 1 Three occurrences: allocation in Joshua, Saul's consultation in 1 Samuel, and military victory recalled in Psalms. The multilingual evidence shows prepositional variation ('at,' 'in') with standard transliteration. The city appears in different contexts—territorial allotment, desperate royal necromancy, and military triumph—showing its long history. The Septuagint's varied spellings (Aeldor, Aendor) reflect pronunciation challenges. The 1 Samuel narrative has made En-dor permanently associated with supernatural encounter, though Psalm 83's reference shows it had earlier significance in Israel's military history.
