En-dor, meaning 'spring of dwelling' or 'spring of the generation,' is most famous as the site where Saul consulted a medium on the eve of his final battle. Located about 14 miles north-northeast of the Jezreel valley, modern Endur preserves the ancient name. The city was allocated to Manasseh but apparently remained under Canaanite control initially, as Joshua 17:11 lists it among cities where Israel failed to drive out the inhabitants. Psalm 83:10 recalls an earlier victory at En-dor, possibly referring to Deborah and Barak's triumph over Sisera.
