N-proper-fs  |  3× in 1 sense
En-gannim; 'spring of gardens,' two Israelite cities—one in Judah, one in Issachar
En-gannim, meaning 'spring of gardens,' identifies two distinct cities in ancient Israel. One was located in the Shephelah lowlands of Judah, possibly modern Umm Jina near Beth-shemesh. The other, more significant En-gannim was in Issachar, a Levitical city assigned to the Gershonite Levites. This northern En-gannim is identified with Jenin, near the southeastern edge of the Jezreel valley, about 15 miles north-northeast of Samaria. The name evokes an image of an irrigated oasis, a spring feeding gardens—a precious resource in the semi-arid environment. The textual transmission shows corruption in 1 Chronicles 6:58, where it appears as Anem.

Senses
1. sense 1 Three occurrences referring to two distinct cities. Joshua 15:34 lists the Judean En-gannim, while Joshua 19:21 and 21:29 refer to the Issacharian city. The multilingual evidence shows standard transliteration, with conjunction forms indicating the name in lists. The Septuagint's varied renderings reflect the textual complexity and the common occurrence of spring-named settlements in ancient Palestine. The Levitical city status of the northern En-gannim gave it religious significance beyond its agricultural advantages.
