Ebal; mountain of cursing north of Shechem, opposite Mount Gerizim
Mount Ebal stands north of Shechem (modern Nablus), opposite Mount Gerizim to the south. In Deuteronomy 11:29 and 27:4, 13, it is designated as the mountain from which the curses of the covenant are pronounced, while Gerizim hosts the blessings. Joshua 8:30 records that Joshua built an altar on Ebal after the conquest of Ai. The name's etymology remains uncertain, though some have connected it to the root meaning 'bare' or 'stony.'
