Ataroth; name of multiple locations, primarily in Transjordan (Gad) and central Canaan (Ephraim/Benjamin)
Ataroth (meaning "crowns" or "wreaths") is the name of several towns in biblical Israel. The most prominent is east of the Jordan, built by Gad (Numbers 32:3, 34), also mentioned on the Moabite Stone. Another variant, Ataroth-shophan, appears in Numbers 32:35. West of Jordan, Ataroth marks boundaries between Ephraim and Benjamin (Joshua 16:2, 5, 7; 18:13). A third Ataroth beth-joab appears in Judah's genealogies (1 Chronicles 2:54). The name likely derives from local topography or fortifications.

Senses
1. sense 1 A place-name designating multiple towns, primarily: (1) Transjordanian Ataroth in Gad's territory (Numbers 32:3, 34), modern Aṭṭarûs about 8 miles north of Dibon, also mentioned on the Mesha Stele; (2) Ataroth-shophan (Numbers 32:35), site unknown; (3) Ataroth on the Ephraim-Benjamin border (Joshua 16:2, 7; possibly = Ataroth-addar, 16:5; 18:13); and (4) Ataroth beth-joab in Judah (1 Chronicles 2:54). Transliterations are consistent: Ataroth/Atarot. Greek versions render as Αταρωθ. The name's multiple attestations reflect common toponymy based on shared geographical features ("crowns" = hilltops?).
