Og -- the giant king of Bashan, defeated by Israel alongside Sihon as paradigmatic conquest victories
The king of Bashan renowned for his enormous size -- his iron bedstead measured nine cubits long (Deut 3:11) -- who was defeated by Israel at Edrei during the wilderness period (Num 21:33-35). Og is almost always paired with Sihon king of the Amorites as the two Transjordanian rulers whose defeat opened the way for Israel's settlement east of the Jordan. Their joint overthrow became a standard confession of God's power, recited in Deuteronomic history (Deut 1-4; 29; 31), Joshua narratives, Nehemiah's prayer (9:22), and the psalms of thanksgiving (Ps 135:11; 136:20).

Senses
1. and Og The proper name Og, identifying the giant king of Bashan defeated by Israel at Edrei (Num 21:33). Paired formulaically with Sihon in recollections of the Transjordanian conquest across Deuteronomy, Joshua, Psalms, and Nehemiah. His prodigious size is evidenced by his iron bedstead (Deut 3:11). Some scholars connect the name to an original divine epithet. The Septuagint renders it Og, and all modern translations preserve the name unchanged across languages. 22×
