Eden; the primordial garden-region of God where Adam and Eve dwelt, archetype of divine blessing and fertility.
The proper name of the territory in which God planted a garden for humanity's first dwelling (Gen 2:8). Probably associated with the Hebrew 'eden meaning 'delight' or 'luxury,' the name evokes a place of abundant, unearned provision -- a river flows out of Eden to water the garden and then divides into four branches (Gen 2:10). After the expulsion, cherubim and a flaming sword guard the way back to the tree of life (Gen 3:24). Later prophets invoke Eden as the ultimate simile for restored fertility: 'the LORD will make her wilderness like Eden' (Isa 51:3; cf. Ezek 36:35; Joel 2:3). Ezekiel 28 and 31 further develop it as 'the garden of God,' rich with precious stones and towering trees. The Septuagint renders it variously as Eden and he tryphe ('the delight').
Senses
1. Eden (proper noun, garden/region) — The proper name of the primordial region where God planted the garden for Adam and Eve. Introduced in Genesis 2:8, 10, 15 and referenced through the expulsion narrative (Gen 3:23-24) and the Cain episode (Gen 4:16). Prophets use it as a simile for paradisiacal fertility and divine blessing restored (Isa 51:3; Ezek 36:35; Joel 2:3). Ezekiel expands the imagery: Eden as 'the garden of God' adorned with precious stones (Ezek 28:13) and towering cedars (Ezek 31:9, 16, 18), representing the highest conceivable splendor. 14×
