Abarim; mountainous region in NW Moab, NE of the Dead Sea, including Mount Nebo
Abarim ('regions beyond') designates the mountain range in northwest Moab overlooking the Dead Sea and the Jordan valley. It is most significant as the location where Moses viewed the Promised Land before his death (Num 27:12; Deut 32:49). The name itself evokes crossing over, fitting its role as the final vantage point before Israel's entry into Canaan. Jeremiah 22:20 uses it poetically as a place from which to cry out.
