Prep-b | N-msc | 2fs  |  49× in 2 senses
For the sake of, because of; in order that, so that — a prepositional particle expressing cause, benefit, or purpose.
A compound preposition (ba'abur) expressing either the cause behind an action or the purpose toward which it aims. The causal sense dominates: God cursed the ground 'because of you' (Gen 3:17), and the patriarchal narratives repeatedly use it to explain divine favor — 'for Abraham's sake' (Gen 26:24), 'for David's sake' (2 Sam 5:12). The purposive sense emerges in goal-directed speech, especially in Genesis: Rebekah instructs Jacob to serve Isaac 'so that he may bless you' (Gen 27:4, 10, 19). Spanish splits cleanly between 'por causa de' (causal) and 'para que' (purposive); French similarly distinguishes 'pour cause de' from 'dans order que.'

Senses
1. for the sake of, because of For the sake of, because of, on account of — causal or benefactive, indicating the reason, ground, or person motivating an action. Covers 35 of 49 occurrences. The ground was cursed 'because of you' (Gen 3:17), and divine blessing is channeled 'for the sake of' key figures (Gen 18:26, 29; 26:24; 2 Sam 5:12; 7:21). Spanish 'por causa de' and French 'pour cause de' consistently mark this causal sense (Exod 9:16; Mic 2:10; Ps 106:32). 35×

2. in order that, so that In order that, so that — purposive or telic, introducing a goal clause or intended outcome. Found in 14 passages, especially in direct speech where a character explains their aim. Rebekah tells Jacob to prepare food 'so that' Isaac will bless him (Gen 27:4, 10, 19, 31); Abraham sets aside seven lambs 'in order that' they may serve as witness (Gen 21:30). Spanish 'para que' and German 'damit' clearly mark the purposive force, distinguishing it from the causal usage. 14×
