Obadiah, a personal name meaning 'servant of Yahweh,' borne by at least twelve individuals in Scripture.
One of the most common theophoric names in the Hebrew Bible, meaning 'servant of Yahweh.' Its most dramatic bearer is the steward of King Ahab's palace who risked his life hiding a hundred prophets from Jezebel's persecution (1 Kgs 18:3–16). The name also belongs to the prophet whose brief book pronounces judgment on Edom (Obad 1), a descendant of David (1 Chr 3:21), tribal chiefs, Levites, gatekeepers, and various officials across Chronicles. Two spelling variants — Ovadyahu and Ovadyah — alternate throughout the text. Translations render it consistently as Obadiah or Abdias.
