Obed-Edom -- Gittite who housed the Ark, and Levitical gatekeepers and musicians bearing the same name
A compound name meaning 'servant of Edom' (or possibly 'servant of man,' if Edom is read as adam). The most prominent bearer is the Gittite in whose home David deposited the Ark of the Covenant for three months after Uzzah's death, during which God blessed Obed-Edom's entire household (2 Sam 6:10-12). The same name -- possibly the same person -- designates Levitical musicians and gatekeepers in the Chronicler's temple organization (1 Chr 15-16; 26). A third Obed-Edom appears as a temple treasury keeper in 2 Chronicles 25:24. The name's theophoric element has prompted scholarly debate about an Edomite deity.
Senses
1. Obed-Edom (proper noun) — The personal name Obed-Edom (Hebrew oved edom, 'servant of Edom'), identifying the Gittite who sheltered the Ark and was blessed (2 Sam 6:10-12; 1 Chr 13:13-14), Levitical gatekeepers and musicians in temple service (1 Chr 15-16; 26:4-15), and a temple treasury custodian (2 Chr 25:24). Whether these represent one individual or several remains debated. Translations preserve the compound form uniformly across languages -- Spanish, French, and German all render Obed-Edom. 22×
