Sepharad—place of exile, possibly Sardis
Sepharad appears in Obadiah as a location where Jerusalem's exiles were living. Traditional identifications range from Sardis in Asia Minor (equated with Assyrian Sparda) to locations in Media. Jewish tradition eventually associated it with Spain, giving rise to the term 'Sephardic' for Spanish Jewry. The precise location remains debated, with the Behistun inscription's Sparda (Sardis) being a leading candidate. The context indicates a significant diaspora community.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Place of Jewish exile mentioned in Obadiah's restoration oracle (Obad 1:20). Most scholars connect with Sparda/Sardis in Asia Minor based on Assyrian inscriptions, though Media locations have also been proposed. Later Jewish tradition identified it as Spain, creating the designation 'Sephardic.' The Septuagint 'Εφραθα' offers a different identification. The site housed an exiled community awaiting return. 1×
