Zafiro, lapislázuli — piedra preciosa de intenso color azul muy apreciada en el arte y culto del antiguo Cercano Oriente
El sustantivo סַפִּיר (sappir) designa una gema de intenso color azul, muy probablemente lapislázuli y no el zafiro moderno (corindón), ya que el zafiro genuino era raro en el antiguo Cercano Oriente mientras que el lapislázuli se importaba desde Afganistán y era atesorado en toda Mesopotamia y Egipto. Bajo los pies de Dios en el Sinaí apareció 'algo semejante a un pavimento de zafiro, claro como el cielo mismo' (Éx 24:10), y el trono divino en la visión de Ezequiel descansa sobre lo que parece ser zafiro (Ez 1:26; 10:1). La piedra figura en el pectoral del sumo sacerdote (Éx 28:18; 39:11), en la meditación de Job sobre el valor incomparable de la sabiduría (Job 28:6, 16) y en los cimientos de la ciudad escatológica (Is 54:11).
