image, idol figure, statue set up for worship or veneration
A noun denoting a carved or sculpted image, possibly originating as the name of a foreign deity before becoming a generic term for idol-statues. In Deuteronomy 4:16, Moses warns against making a 'pesel temunat kol-semel'—a carved image in the form of any figure—linking it to the broader prohibition against idolatry. Manasseh places such an idol in the Temple itself (2 Chr 33:7), later removing it in repentance (2 Chr 33:15). Ezekiel encounters the provocative 'image of jealousy' at the Temple's north gate (Ezek 8:3, 5), an idol so offensive it arouses God's jealous anger. The Phoenician cognate confirms its use as a standard term for cult images.
Senses
1. sense 1 — An idol-image or cultic statue, a physical representation set up for worship that provokes divine jealousy. Deuteronomy 4:16 prohibits making any such figure; Manasseh installs one in the Temple (2 Chr 33:7) and later removes it (2 Chr 33:15). Ezekiel 8:3, 5 describes the 'semel of jealousy' at the Temple gate. English 'image/idol,' Spanish 'ídolo/imagen,' and French 'image/figure' all converge on the sense of a physical cult object. The Phoenician cognate semel/semelet confirms widespread Northwest Semitic usage for divine representations. 5×
