Sinim, a distant people or land
Sinim appears in Isaiah's prophecy of Israel's restoration, when exiles will return 'from the north and from the west, and these from the land of Sinim.' The identification has puzzled interpreters for centuries. Early proposals included China (based on phonetic similarity), but this seems unlikely given historical context. More probable is an emendation to 'Syenites' (people of Syene/Aswan in southern Egypt), which would provide a neat geographical balance—north, west, and south. The text as it stands reaches toward the known ends of the earth, emphasizing the comprehensiveness of the return.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Geographic/ethnic term in Isaiah 49:12, marking a distant land from which exiles return. Traditional identification with China is doubtful. Many scholars emend to 'Syenites' (people from Aswan in southern Egypt), providing balanced directions: north, west, south. The term functions to extend God's gathering of Israel to the remotest known regions, showing no one is beyond the reach of restoration. 1×
