Sinai — the sacred mountain and wilderness where God gave the Torah to Moses
Sinai is the proper name for both the mountain and the surrounding wilderness that serve as the supreme theophanic site in Scripture. All 35 occurrences point to the same sacred geography: the place where YHWH descended in fire and smoke, where Moses received the covenant tablets, and where Israel was constituted as a holy nation (Exod 19-34). The name dominates the Priestly source, which favors har Sinai ('Mount Sinai') and midbar Sinai ('wilderness of Sinai'), while E and D prefer the alternate name Horeb for the same location. The Septuagint renders it Seina or Sina, and every modern language preserves it virtually unchanged — Spanish 'Sinai,' French 'Sinai,' German 'Sinai' — as befits the most iconic place-name in Torah.
Senses
1. Sinai (place name) — The proper name for the mountain and desert region of the Mosaic covenant. Concentrated in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers (P source), it marks the location of the giving of the law (Exod 19:11-20; 31:18), the census instructions (Num 1:1), and wilderness encampments (Num 33:15-16). The alternate name Horeb in E and D designates the same site. 35×
