El término es un préstamo del griego tardío συμφωνία, del cual derivan palabras modernas como «sinfonía». La palabra presenta variantes textuales: el ketiv registra סִימְפּוֹן o סִיפְנְיָה en algunos versículos, mientras que el qeré lee סוּפֹּנְיָה o סוּמְפֹּנְיָה. El instrumento refleja la influencia cultural helenística en el período neobabilónico.
