Drink offering or libation poured out in worship; also a cast metal image or molten idol.
Two homonymous nouns sharing the same consonantal form nesekh but arising from different verbal roots. The far more common meaning is a libation -- wine or another liquid poured out alongside burnt offerings and grain offerings in Israelite sacrificial worship, meticulously prescribed throughout Leviticus and Numbers. The second meaning, from the root nasakh ('to pour, cast metal'), refers to an idol made by pouring molten metal into a mold. Isaiah uses the term with biting sarcasm: the idols and their cast images are nothing but wind and emptiness (Isa 41:29), and the prophet's own people dare claim a molten image predicted future events (Isa 48:5).

Senses
1. drink offering, libation A drink offering or libation, a liquid (usually wine) poured out as part of sacrificial worship. This sense accounts for 60 of 64 occurrences, deeply embedded in the Priestly legislation of Numbers 15 and 28-29. Multilingual evidence uniformly points to cultic liquid offerings: German Trankopfer ('drink-sacrifice'), French boire-offrande ('drink-offering'), and Spanish libacion all specify ritual pouring. Jacob pours a nesekh on his memorial pillar at Bethel (Gen 35:14), and Joel laments that the grain offering and drink offering are cut off from the house of the LORD (Joel 1:9, 13). 60×

2. cast image, molten idol A cast image or molten idol formed by pouring metal into a mold. Though sharing the same consonantal spelling, this sense derives from the root meaning 'to cast, pour out metal.' Appearing four times in prophetic condemnation, it is rendered distinctly in several languages: Spanish imagen-fundida ('cast image'), English 'molten image,' and Hindi dhali-hui-murti ('cast idol'). Isaiah 41:29 declares that idols and their cast images are wind and confusion, while Jeremiah 10:14 and 51:17 pronounce every goldsmith shamed by his nesekh, for his molten image is a lie.
