To plant vegetation, trees, or vineyards; figuratively, to establish people in a land or fix something in place
One of the Bible's most vivid agricultural verbs, נָטַע pictures the act of setting a living thing into the earth so it can take root and grow. God himself 'planted a garden in Eden' (Gen 2:8), and the image threads through Scripture as vineyard planting, orchard tending, and the promise of settled agricultural life. Prophetically, God 'plants' his people in their land — a powerful metaphor where Spanish 'Los plantaste' and French 'plante eux' capture the tenderness of divine settlement. In rare cases the root extends beyond agriculture to fixing tent-stakes or driving nails into place (Eccl 12:11).
Senses
1. plant vegetation — The literal agricultural sense: to plant trees, vines, gardens, or other vegetation in the ground. This is the dominant usage across the Hebrew Bible, from God planting the Garden of Eden (Gen 2:8) and Noah planting the first vineyard (Gen 9:20), through laws about newly planted fruit trees (Lev 19:23), to prophetic promises of planting vineyards and eating their fruit (Amos 9:14). The Spanish 'Y plantó' and German 'du pflanzen' faithfully reflect this concrete horticultural action across diverse passage types. 48×

2. establish people in a place — A metaphorical extension: to plant or establish people firmly in a place, especially of God settling Israel in the Promised Land. The image transfers the rootedness of a planted tree to the security of a settled nation. God 'planted them' at Sinai's song (Exod 15:17), promised David he would 'plant' Israel so they would dwell undisturbed (2 Sam 7:10; 1 Chr 17:9), and Jeremiah observes that God 'planted' even the wicked and they took root (Jer 12:2). Spanish 'Los plantaste' and French 'plante eux' with pronominal objects marking persons rather than plants make this metaphorical shift visible in translation. 9×

3. pitch or fix in place — A rare extended sense: to pitch, drive in, or fix firmly in place — applied to non-vegetative objects. In Eccl 12:11, the words of the wise are like 'planted' nails (firmly driven in), and in Dan 11:45, a king 'plants' his palatial tents between seas. The root idea of thrusting something into the ground persists, but the object is a stake, nail, or tent rather than a living plant. Spanish 'plantados' for the nails and 'plantará' for the tents preserve the verbal connection to planting while the context shifts the referent entirely. 2×
