Aramaic verb: to descend, come down (Peal); to deposit, place, store (Haphel); to be deposed (Hophal)
An Aramaic verb appearing in Daniel and Ezra, cognate with Arabic 'nazala' (to descend). In the Peal stem, a heavenly watcher 'comes down from heaven' in Nebuchadnezzar's dream (Dan 4:13, 23). The Haphel causative shifts to administrative language: royal documents are 'deposited' in the Babylonian archives (Ezra 6:1), and temple vessels are ordered to be placed back in Jerusalem (Ezra 5:15; 6:5). The Hophal passive delivers the most dramatic use: Nebuchadnezzar 'was deposed' from his royal throne when his heart was lifted up in pride (Dan 5:20).
Senses
1. deposit, place, store (Haphel causative) — To deposit, place, or store in a designated location (Haphel causative). In Ezra 6:1 the passive participle describes royal records 'deposited' in the Babylonian treasure house; Ezra 5:15 and 6:5 command the temple vessels to be carried and placed back in the Jerusalem sanctuary. Spanish 'depositados/puestos' and English 'deposit/were deposited' reflect the bureaucratic-administrative register of this stem. 3×

2. come down, descend (Aramaic Peal) — To come down or descend from above (Peal, equivalent to Hebrew Qal). Used exclusively in Daniel's vision of the divine watcher 'coming down from heaven' (Dan 4:13, 23). Arabic 'nazala' (descend) is the closest cognate. Spanish 'descendiendo/descendía' and English 'coming down' capture the theophanic gravity of a heavenly being's descent. 2×

3. be deposed, be brought down (Hophal passive) — To be deposed or brought down from a position of authority (Hophal passive). Daniel 5:20 declares that when Nebuchadnezzar's heart was lifted in pride, 'he was deposed from his royal throne.' The passive causative turns physical descent into political downfall. Spanish 'fue depuesto' and English 'he was deposed' show how the root's spatial meaning extends to the loss of sovereign power. 1×
