N-fs  |  1× in 1 sense
light, daylight (poetic, opposite of darkness)
A feminine noun denoting light or daylight, appearing in Job 3:4 in Job's curse on his birth day. He wishes that day would remain in darkness: 'let not light shine upon it.' The term is equivalent to Aramaic נְהוֹרָא and relates to Hebrew נהר ('shine'). Job uses light-darkness opposition to curse his existence: may that day be erased from the calendar, never illuminated, swallowed by perpetual darkness. Light represents existence, blessing, divine favor—all of which Job wishes removed from his birth day.

Senses
1. sense 1 Light, daylight—the illumination that marks day as opposed to darkness. Job 3:4 curses his birth day: 'let that day be darkness; let not God seek it from above, let not נְהָרָה shine upon it.' This is light as positive phenomenon, the glow that marks days as real and recognized. Job wants his birthday deleted from reality—let darkness claim it, let no light ever touch it. Spanish 'luz' and French simply transliterate, acknowledging the poetic term. This is cosmological light: the brightness that makes days count, that brings them into being. By cursing his day to remain unlighted, Job curses his entry into existence itself.
