Nebuchadnezzar — the great king of Babylon who destroyed Jerusalem and exiled Judah
The Babylonian monarch Nebuchadnezzar II (נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּר / נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּר, from Akkadian Nabû-kudurri-uṣur, 'Nebo, protect the boundary') reigned 605–562 BCE and dominates the historical books and prophets. He besieged Jerusalem three times, ultimately destroying Solomon's temple in 586 BCE and deporting Judah's elite (2 Kgs 24–25). The two Hebrew spellings — with resh and with nun — both appear in Scripture; the resh form is historically more accurate. Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel all interact extensively with this pivotal figure who became, paradoxically, an instrument of divine judgment.
