Nebuzaradan — Babylonian captain of the guard who oversaw Jerusalem's destruction and the Judean deportation
The Akkadian name Nabû-zēr-iddina means 'Nebo has given offspring.' Nebuzaradan served as rab-tabbāḥîm ('captain of the guard' or 'chief executioner') under Nebuchadnezzar II. He directed the burning of the temple and the royal palace (2 Kgs 25:8–9; Jer 52:12–13), supervised the deportation of Jerusalem's population (2 Kgs 25:11; Jer 39:9), and ironically became the instrument through which Jeremiah was released and protected (Jer 39:11–14; 40:1–5). All sixteen occurrences carry his official title, underscoring his administrative role in the catastrophe of 586 BC.
