Makkedah, a Canaanite royal city in the Shephelah lowlands of Judah, captured by Joshua during his southern campaign.
A Canaanite city in the low hill country of Judah, Makkedah is remembered chiefly for the dramatic episode in which five Amorite kings hid in its cave during Joshua's rout after the battle of Gibeon (Josh 10:16-17). Joshua sealed the cave, completed the pursuit, then returned to execute the kings and capture the city (Josh 10:28). It appears in the list of conquered kings (Josh 12:16) and among the towns of Judah's inheritance (Josh 15:41). The Greek Septuagint renders it Makeda, and the site is tentatively identified near modern el-Mughar, southwest of Ekron.

Senses
1. Makkedah (proper name, Canaanite city) The proper place-name Makkedah, designating a fortified Canaanite city in the Shephelah near Beth-horon and Libnah. All nine occurrences cluster around Joshua's southern campaign narrative (Josh 10:10, 16, 17, 21, 28, 29; 12:16; 15:41). The multilingual evidence uniformly transliterates the name -- Spanish 'Maqueda,' French and German 'Makkedah' -- confirming its status as a single, unambiguous toponym with no semantic extension.
