bellows; instrument for blowing air to intensify fire
This word appears only in Jeremiah 6:29, in a metallurgical metaphor for failed prophetic ministry. The prophet pictures himself as a refiner trying to purify Israel, but 'the bellows blow fiercely, the lead is consumed by the fire'—yet the refining fails because the wicked are not removed. Bellows were essential for achieving the high temperatures needed to smelt and refine metal. Their fierce blowing represents prophetic intensity that nonetheless fails to purify a rebellious people.

1. sense 1 — English and Spanish both use 'bellows/el-fuelle,' the standard term for the air-blowing device. Jeremiah's metaphor draws on the refining process: despite maximum heat (fierce bellows), the ore refuses to yield pure metal because the impurities are too deeply embedded—Israel's wickedness resists even intense prophetic fire (Jer 6:29). 1×
