Manoah: the father of Samson, from the tribe of Dan.
A proper masculine name meaning 'rest' or 'resting place,' derived from the root nuach. Manoah was a Danite from the town of Zorah whose wife received the angelic announcement of Samson's birth (Judg 13:2-22). He is portrayed as a devout but cautious man who prays to see the angel again and offers a sacrifice on which the angel ascends in the flame (Judg 13:19-20). His alarmed reaction, 'We shall surely die, for we have seen God,' is gently corrected by his more perceptive wife (Judg 13:22-23).
