Mahlah is best known as one of the five daughters of Zelophehad who boldly petitioned Moses for an inheritance in the land, since their father had died without sons (Num 27:1). Their case established a landmark ruling in Israelite inheritance law. The name also appears once in a Gileadite genealogy (1 Chr 7:18), where the gender may actually be masculine. The Septuagint renders it variously as Maala and Maela.
