Madai / Media — a son of Japheth and the nation/territory of the Medes in the ancient Near East.
Names both the ancestor figure in the Table of Nations (Gen 10:2 = 1 Chr 1:5) and the powerful Iranian people and territory known as Media. The Medes appear first as a place of Israelite exile — the 'cities of the Medes' to which Assyria deported northern Israelites (2 Kgs 17:6; 18:11). They then emerge as a threatening military power whom Isaiah summons against Babylon (Isa 13:17; 21:2). The late monarchic and postexilic texts regularly pair 'Media and Persia' (or 'Persia and Media') as a dual empire (Esth 1:3, 14, 18, 19; 10:2; Dan 8:20), reflecting the historical Medo-Persian confederation. Darius is identified as 'of the seed of Media' (Dan 9:1). Spanish uses 'Media,' French 'Medie/Madai,' German 'Medien.'
Senses
1. Madai / Media (proper noun) — The proper noun Madai — the son of Japheth in the Table of Nations (Gen 10:2; 1 Chr 1:5) — and by extension the people and territory of Media (the Medes). Used for the cities of Median exile (2 Kgs 17:6; 18:11), the Medes as a military power summoned against Babylon (Isa 13:17; 21:2), and the compound 'Media and Persia' designating the dual empire (Esth 1:3, 14, 18–19; Dan 8:20). Spanish 'Media/Maday,' French 'Medie/Madai,' and German 'Medien' all confirm consistent identification as a geo-ethnic proper name. 16×
