Megiddo — strategic fortified city in the Jezreel Valley controlling the Via Maris trade route
Megiddo (מְגִדּוֹ) was one of the most strategically important cities in ancient Canaan, guarding the pass through the Carmel ridge into the Jezreel Valley along the Via Maris trade and military route. Joshua lists it among the conquered Canaanite cities (Josh 12:21; 17:11), though Manasseh could not fully drive out its inhabitants (Judg 1:27). Deborah's song celebrates victory 'by the waters of Megiddo' (Judg 5:19). Solomon fortified it as one of his chariot cities (1 Kgs 9:15), and King Josiah met his death there confronting Pharaoh Necho (2 Kgs 23:29-30; 2 Chr 35:22). Zechariah 12:11 alludes to 'mourning at the plain of Megiddon.' Its apocalyptic resonance echoes in Revelation's 'Armageddon' (Har-Megiddo).

Site of Deborah and Barak's victory over Sisera's forces (Judg 5:19), one of Solomon's administrative and chariot cities (1 Kgs 9:15), and the location of Josiah's fatal encounter with Pharaoh Necho (2 Kgs 23:29-30; 2 Chr 35:22).
