Lamech (לֶמֶךְ) — name borne by two antediluvian figures: the Cainite warrior-poet and Seth's descendant
The name Lamech (לֶמֶךְ) belongs to two antediluvian figures in Genesis. The Cainite Lamech, seventh from Adam through Cain, is the first recorded polygamist and the speaker of the fierce 'Song of the Sword' (Gen 4:23-24), boasting of disproportionate vengeance. His sons Jabal, Jubal, and Tubal-Cain inaugurate pastoralism, music, and metalworking, making Lamech a hinge figure in the development of civilization and violence. The Sethite Lamech, ninth from Adam through Seth, is Noah's father. He names his son with a prophetic wordplay on 'comfort' (נחם), hoping Noah will bring relief from the curse on the ground (Gen 5:28-31). The Chronicler preserves only the Sethite lineage (1 Chr 1:3).
