Lehi, site of Samson's exploits in Judah's territory
A location in the Shephelah lowlands where Samson killed a thousand Philistines with a donkey's jawbone. The place-name either derives from or gives rise to the wordplay on לְחִי (jawbone)—Samson names the site Ramath-lehi ('Height of the Jawbone') after his victory. A spring miraculously appears there, called En-hakkore ('Spring of the Caller'). The site's exact location is unknown but lay near Philistine territory in Judah's border region.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Judges 15:9 reports the Philistines encamping 'at Lehi' (בַּלֶּחִי), provoking Samson's assault. Verse 14 describes his approach 'unto Lehi' (לֶחִי) when the Spirit rushed upon him. Verse 19 locates the miraculous spring 'in Lehi' (בַּלֶּחִי). The name's connection to jawbone (the weapon Samson found there) creates an etiological narrative explaining both place-name and topographical feature (the spring). Translations transliterate: Spanish Lehi, French Lehi, treating this as indeclinable proper noun despite the article. 3×
